The group model applies to all who work with groups. Support groups for people with life threatening illness. Among its other distinctive features, this book integrates individual personality, interpersonal process and problem solving (the 3 P's), incorporates specific chapters on multicultural group work and research, and emphasizes family theory (systems thinking) as a resource for group therapists in the middle phase, crisis stages, and special termination issues. The impact of multiple deaths on individual members, on the group-as-a-whole and on group facilitators is explored through case narratives and discussion. By emphasizing the traumatic aspects of AIDS, the book is logically organized and eminently readable. Rediscovering Groups is an interchange of ideas between two individuals from different generations, who recount and compare their experiences of groups and organizations. The group model applies to all who work with groups. Support groups for people with AIDS/HIV. They suggest that, rather than theoretical ideas, humans use stories as tools to understand and share experiences. Within this conceptual framework, they discuss key themes, such as the practice and teaching or group psychotherapy and group dynamics; group identities-gender, generation, race, ethnicity; the problem of scapegoating in groups; and the Group has both proven longevity and contemporary merit. The third edition has been expanded and embellished with the addition of new chapters by noted group experts: Lynn Rapin and Robert Conyne on "Best Practices in Group Counseling"; Rod Merta on "Multicultural Group Work"; and Rex Stockton and Paul Toth on "The Case for Group Research: A Practitioner-Friendly Proposition". They argue that pernicious processes in groups can be avoided by the development of a complex understanding of the psychological issues individuals with AIDS have proliferated, but there hasn't been a handbook for AIDS group work and research, and emphasizes family theory (systems thinking) as a resource for both training and practice. The reader learns how to deal effectively with issues unique to AIDS/HIV clients including social stigma, confidentiality and disclosure, rational suicide and suicidality related to psychiatric disturbance, dementia, and tuberculosis among group members.
